No. 18 Tennessee trying to overcome 'butterflies' (AP)
Wed, 27 Aug 2008 06:14:09 PDT-Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer still gets the jitters at the start of football season, even though he's been through 16 of them already. "This time of year I start getting butterflies about all the things that can happen in a game," he said Tuesday. "You try to cover every situation that can happen." His fear isn't unfounded.

Tennessee Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Wed, 27 Aug 2008 02:07:02 PDT-

When Tennessee changed its schedule around to open the season Monday night at UCLA, its athletic department and coach Phillip Fulmer spun the decision as an opportunity to play a national TV game on Labor Day night.

Yet for a few extra dollars, the currency which runs everything in life, the Volunteers opted to take a chance. Instead of an almost sure win against UAB, which was supposed to be the opener, UT made the switch and now faces a trip across the country.

A trip across the country with a first-year starter at quarterback, to boot.

"The fact that we are breaking in a new quarterback makes things more interesting, I think," Fulmer said.

Jonathan Crompton is that new quarterback, and the pressure is squarely on his broad shoulders.

Two Vols suspended for season opener at UCLA (AP)
Mon, 25 Aug 2008 18:05:50 PDT-Tennessee starting defensive back Brett Vinson and defensive tackle Donald Langley were suspended for the No. 18 Volunteers' opener at UCLA next Monday. Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said after Monday's practice that academic issues led to the suspensions. Vinson, a sophomore, started 10 games last season at left cornerback.

Vols' new offensive chief trying to learn (AP)
Sat, 23 Aug 2008 00:57:51 PDT-Dave Clawson is doing a lot of listening. After spending nearly a decade as a head coach, Clawson wants to learn as much as he can about the way business is done at Tennessee in his first year as the Vols' offensive coordinator. "There's a way that Tennessee does things and a way they've been successful.
