Tennessee Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Wed, 03 Dec 2008 21:05:51 PST-

The Volunteers sent Phillip Fulmer out a winner by beating Kentucky. It was just about the only thing they did right in 2008.

Expected to mount a competitive defense of last year's Southeastern Conference East Division title, Tennessee instead produced a Gigli-worthy flop, going 5-7 overall and 3-5 in the SEC while getting its long-time coach run out.

Fulmer announced his resignation Nov. 3 and said the last 3 1/2 weeks of his reign felt like a funeral. While he may soon rise again, his last Vol team was basically embalmed right about the time the leaves changed.

One day after Fulmer celebrated his last game and win on the UT sideline, the Volunteers turned the page, naming former Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin as the new boss in Knoxville.

"When it...

Vols coach Kiffin takes first jab from Spurrier (AP)
Tue, 02 Dec 2008 11:10:21 PST-Lane Kiffin has already discovered one thing that comes with the job of being Tennessee's coach: needling from Steve Spurrier. The South Carolina coach, who had a history of taking verbal jabs at Kiffin's predecessor, Phillip Fulmer, questioned whether Kiffin broke NCAA recruiting rules by contacting Tennessee recruits before he was cleared to do so.

Lane Kiffin introduced as Tennessee's 21st coach (AP)
Mon, 01 Dec 2008 16:27:05 PST-Even though Tennessee's new coach is the youngest one leading a major program, Lane Kiffin has been around football for almost all of his 33 years. The former coach of the NFL's Oakland Raiders and son of longtime NFL defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, is five months younger than the previous youngest coach in the Bowl Subdivision, Northwestern's Pat Fitzgerald.

Vols send Fulmer out with 28-10 win over Kentucky (AP)
Sat, 29 Nov 2008 20:33:11 PST-

Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer congratulates Montario Hardesty (2) as he comes off the field during the second half of an NCAA college football game against Kentucky Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 in Knoxville, Tenn. Tennessee won 28-10.

As Phillip Fulmer exited the field for the last time as Tennessee coach, fans chanted his name, the game ball was thrust into his hands and he was hoisted to the shoulders of his players. Fulmer would have preferred not to be saying goodbye, but at least he got a send-off he'll never forget. "We've had a great run.

Tennessee AD says he hasn't hired anyone (AP)
Wed, 26 Nov 2008 17:03:24 PST-Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton says he has not offered the Vols coaching job to anyone yet. There was at least one news report Wednesday that Tennessee had made an offer to former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin and that Kiffin was believed to be assembling a staff of assistants. Hamilton says any report of a job offer is "incorrect information" and that the search process is ongoing.

Fulmer considered retiring from Tennessee (AP)
Wed, 26 Nov 2008 14:17:06 PST-Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer considered retiring when he was on top of college football. Now his time with the Volunteers is winding down and his team is simply playing out the string. Fulmer said he mulled retirement after the Vols' 1998 national championship season and in 2001, when they nearly played for another national title.

Fulmer trying to focus on last game as Vols' coach (AP)
Tue, 25 Nov 2008 00:53:44 PST-Phillip Fulmer has had plenty of time to dwell on the end of his time at Tennessee. Now, with one game left, all he wants to think about is playing Kentucky. "I told some good friends it's been like a three-week long funeral in some ways," he said. "I don't think I would encourage any athletic director to do it that way.

Tennessee beats rival Vanderbilt 20-10 (AP)
Sat, 22 Nov 2008 13:02:33 PST-

Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer congratulates Tennessee center Josh McNeil (50) after Tennessee scored against Vanderbilt in the second quarter of an NCAA college football game in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008.

In the middle of one of its worst seasons in history, Tennessee still found a way to beat instate rival Vanderbilt. Eric Berry returned his seventh interception of the season for a touchdown to help the Vols beat the Commodores 20-10 on Saturday. The win helped Tennessee (4-7, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) avoid a school-worst eight losses for at least one week while Vanderbilt (6-5, 4-4) missed a...
